"(I Don't Want to Go to) Chelsea" is the second episode of the Apple TV+ series, Ted Lasso. It premiered on March 22, 2023.
Synopsis[]
News of a top player looking to move to London sends the English clubs into a frenzy. Richmond play their first game back in the Premier League.
Plot[]
Keeley is in the KJPR offices as colleagues sit at their desks. Barbara tells Keeley to make sure she doesn’t stay too long at the advert shoot as the client pays for the shoot, but they have to pay the overtime. Keeley mentions how her staff aren’t very loose and she suggests taking them to a picnic which Barbara declines, despite not knowing when the date is. Keeley leaves for Nelson Road Stadium. In Rebecca’s office, Ted walks in to find Trent Crimm who is writing a book and wants to follow Richmond. Rebecca wants to give Ted the final say, though while he thinks she, Higgins, and Keeley signal for him to say no. He agrees to instead. Afterwards, Higgins finds out that Zava, a high-profile player, is leaving Juventus as his wife wants to move to England after watching The Office. They discuss whether to go for him as he brings a lot of drama but also a lot of trophies and a large social media following. Rebecca agrees to it, admitting to Trent Crimm that it’s to stop her husband, Rupert, getting the player for West Ham. Outside the room, Keeley asks Ted for advice on her situation with her colleagues not loosening up. Ted suggests taking them to an activity outside of work, like an escape room and not necessarily something so in depth that Keeley has in mind. After Ted leaves, Isaac speaks to Keeley asking for a shoe deal.
Jamie and Isaac spot Keeley talking to Roy, where Isaac says he can see that the pair have broken up due to his knowledge of body language. Jamie speaks to Roy about it and Roy shrugs off attempts at sympathy from Jamie. Will overhears and he is told that the conversation shouldn’t leave this room. Ted meanwhile is reading a book on football strategy that Coach Beard normally reads and doesn’t fully understand it. Ted and Beard then discuss the new potential signing, Zava, and Beard shows Ted a video of a vigilante protecting someone which is Zava himself. Ted notices the players are upset and after some confusion as to why, they tell him it’s due to Roy and Keeley breaking up. Roy tells the players not to say anything. At an advert shoot, Keeley is conducting proceedings when an old friend, Shandy Fine, arrives. Shandy is able to offer some advice to improve the shoot for the client which gives Keeley pause for thought at how easily Shandy thought about the solution.
Rebecca talks to her mother who wants to refer Rebecca to a psychic, citing it would help her. As the call ends, Higgins interrupts saying Zava will not meet with Richmond and instead wants to move to Chelsea. Elsewhere, the players talk but stop as Trent Crimm enters, following instructions from Roy. Trent Crimm is sharing an office with Roy and Trent is keen to make things work. Trent receives a call from his publisher and Roy, not appreciating the noise, begins to pop balloons left for him out of sympathy for his break-up, causing Trent to leave the room. Shandy and Keeley talk in the KJPR offices and devise a role for Shandy to take at the firm. Barbara joins them and asks Shandy a series of questions where she determines Shandy is unqualified for any roles and Keeley made up a job for her. Barbera leaves the room and Keeley follows, where she tells her Chief Financial Officer that she can’t talk to her colleagues like that. Keeley then notices and appreciates Barbara’s snowglobe collection and wants to work with Barbara to improve. Barbara suggests a new job title for Shandy which Keeley appreciates.
Later, Trent asks Roy for a second chance but Roy says no. The next day, at Stamford Bridge, Roy walks out to a full crowd for Richmond’s match with Chelsea. He receives an ovation from them for his return to the club. Zava arrives at the game and Higgins, Rebecca, and Keeley watch him. Chelsea score the first goal and Richmond go into halftime 1-0 down. Rebecca notices Rupert is at the game and he is talking to Zava, ready to invite him to play at West Ham. Rebecca believes he will be successful, citing an experience she had with Rupert where he made her feel very special. In the Richmond dressing room, players discuss the first half and are interrupted by Trent and they stop talking. After a word from Ted, Roy tells Trent to talk to him in private. There, Roy tells Trent about an article he wrote about him when he first started at 17 years old, a scathing review of his performance. After an apology from Trent, Roy goes back into the dressing room saying the players can talk in front of Trent now, much to their relief.
In the stadium, Rebecca decides she needs to stop Zava going to West Ham so she goes to meet him. She is stopped from doing so by Zava’s chaperone and Rupert then interrupts them. After a brief exchange, Rupert and the chaperone walk away as Zava walks past to go into the bathroom. Rebecca follows him in there, and tells him that West Ham is an easy option for him as they will win with or without him - his best test would be at Richmond. Near the end of the game, Dani scores the equaliser for Richmond who take a point away from Stamford Bridge. At the Chelsea press conference where they’re due to sign Zava, the star player makes an unexpected decision to sign for Richmond much to the surprise of Rebecca and disdain of Rupert. At the end of the day, the coaching staff prepare to head home when Ted asks Roy what he thought about being back at Chelsea that day. Roy says he felt sad due to past experiences, but perhaps wishes he’d stayed at the club just to enjoy himself.
