Arlo White is a real-life football commentator and a recurring character featured in the Apple TV+ series, Ted Lasso. He works alongside Chris Powell throughout the series, commenting the AFC Richmond matches in the Premier League, its relegation, and its promotion. He often talks about Ted Lasso and his unusual method of coaching.
Joyless Start[]
During a match against Crystal Palace F.C., Arlo recaps that Nelson Road Stadium has a new owner Rebecca Welton, a new manager Ted, and a new dawn for the underdog club Richmond, while asking a question to Chris whether he ever played under an American manager in UK football league due to it being unusual.
When Richmond loses the match, he concludes that it's an inauspicious start to the Ted Lasso era. He says that Richmond looks disjointed, uninspired, and joyless during the match under the new manager and coach. However, Arlo compliments Sam Obisanya as the only bright spot within the club, and gives a backhanded compliment towards Jamie Tartt.
A New Dawn[]
During a match against Watford F.C., he expresses his shock to see Jamie and Richmond Captain Roy Kent arguing in the field and shoving at each other because the younger player is being disrespectful against Sam who is "hurt". Arlo comments that Sam is going to play through the pain and praise his determination.
Arlo mentions how talented Jamie is and whether that he will tie the game with the help of his teammates or alone for glory, which is actually a rhetorical question. He wonders aloud where Richmond would be without him.
He is confused to see Ted running into the stands to approach Rebecca who is sitting at the VIP section and then running back to the dugout, and shocked to see that Ted is replacing Jamie with Robbie Roberts. The decision is proven to be successful because after Jamie is replaced, the team wins the match and everyone is celebrating on the field, and Arlo is excited declaring the winner.
Colors and Numbers[]
Arlo observes that Richmond puts everything on the line because if the club lose the match against Manchester City F.C., then the club will be relegated. The fans are hoping for the winning, but then he adds that they shouldn't hope because of Richmond upon Thames's pithy phrase "The Hope That Kills You".
Arlo compares the match as 'David meets Goliath', which Chris sarcastically remarks if David forgot to put a stone to his slingshot. He admires Dani Rojas and Ted's Trick plays even after Arlo Dixon fails to score a goal. He also congratulates Thierry Zoreaux of his stellar play in goal, especially after correcting his co-worker about his last name pronunciation.
When Ted brings out Roy, he politely says that the Captain is a slow player. However, Roy manages to chase after Jamie and tackles him, but unfortunately with a heavy price as he hurt his knee badly. He refuse to go back to the locker room with a stretcher but with thunderous applause from the fans, Arlo says that he is being serenade by them with his own chant: "He's here, he's there, he's every-fucking-where. Roy Kent!". Both Arlo and Chris are commenting that this feels like a farewell from Roy.
Arlo and Chris then analyzes Richard Montlaur fake injury to get a late free kick but gets distracted when the new Captain Isaac McAdoo orders everyone to do the 'Lasso Special'. Both commentators are bewildered to see the trick play and Arlo shouts, "Is this American football?? He also exclaims about 'colors and numbers' that Thierry is yelling to his teammates like Jack Dawkins, Moe Bumbercatch, Tommy Winchester, Colin Hughes, Gareth Canterbury, Dixon, Dani, and Sam.
Arlo screams when Dani scores a goal but he sees that Jamie immediately takes the ball and passes it to his teammate, Hendrix, and scores a winning goal. He announces that Manchester wins, and Richmond gets relegated.
