Defender is a position in UK football which involves defenders attempting to stop opposition team players (usually strikers) from taking shots at goal. Defenders do their job through forcing opposition players out of the playing area or tackling to try and win the ball back for themselves. They must be careful when doing this though as this can lead to fouls being committed, which may result in a yellow card or, in severe situations, a red card and being sent off the pitch.
In the Apple TV+ series, Ted Lasso, Sam Obisanya is a right-back defender specifically at AFC Richmond. He remains on the right-hand side of the pitch to block attacks from opposition players, and also to advance forward to move the team towards the opposition goal.
