"Let It Go" was a song from the Disney film, Frozen, which Rebecca sang in a Liverpudlian karaoke bar following AFC Richmond's win against Everton F.C.
While Rebecca knew that Sassy had scheduled her to sing a song at the club during this post-victory celebration, she didn't know which one until she took the stage. Nevertheless, the song was in her wheelhouse, since Rebecca had bonded with Sassy's daughter, over another Frozen song, "Do You Want to Build a Snowman?". Indeed, prior to singing the song, she partly dedicated the performance to her goddaughter, perpetuating the relationship the two had with the film.
To her entire team's visible astonishment — she sung it with extraordinary aplomb, validating Sassy's earlier claim to Keeley that Rebecca had an amazing voice.
Thematic notes[]
The song's lyrics, often visible on the teleprompter which Rebecca didn't especially need to use, spoke largely of personal empowerment. As such they resonated differently for different people.
Most superficially, Sassy had told Keeley that the current Rebecca wasn't really Rebecca, but a kind of ice queen. The song allowed her to "let go" and the fun, youthful Rebecca to re-emerge.
The song also spoke the broader Richmond club, who had gone for 60 years without a win at Everton, but were now liberated from those historical shackles.
The song could well have impacted Keeley's decision to pursue a relationship with Roy in the wake of leaving Jamie. Her first attempt at a romantic interlude with the Richmond captain immediately followed the evening's karaoke.
But the song most impacted Ted. Faced with the challenge of signing his divorce papers during the away match, he had been plagued with an inability to let go of the tie to Michelle and particularly his son. Rebecca's rendition of the song set off a profound panic attack, from which only Rebecca could walk him back. Following this incident, which had him hallucinating his son's voice, he did find the calm with which to sign the papers and move on — so much so that he slept with Sassy soon thereafter.
