Mae Green is a recurring character featured in the Apple TV+ series, Ted Lasso. She is a pub owner and a barmaid of The Crown & Anchor in the Richmond upon Thames. Her last name is never revealed throughout the seasons. She is usually seen behind the bar making drinks, tending the patrons by delivering them drinks and food, and watching football matches with everyone on the big TV. Although considered to be elderly, she is very passionate and enthusiast about football and she can be intimidating especially to the pub regulars such as Paul, Jeremy, and Baz.
The Barmaid[]
When Ted Lasso and Coach Beard are going over the suggestions from AFC Richmond players for how to improve conditions at the club, they discover that the players hate their new coaches, and most of the anonymous messages from the suggestion box are calling Ted as 'wanker'. Mae comments that he shouldn't let himself to be called rude names and wanker by the players. Ted then asks her what is 'wanker' means - Mae doesn't answer verbally, but gives him a hand gesture as an answer. Ted thanked her because he's a visual learner and Mae really helps for the explanation.
While the pub patrons watching the match between AFC Richmond and Crystal Palace F.C., they are yelling 'wanker' at Ted. Mae screams at them to be quiet and give the club and the new coach a chance, but the patrons refuse.
Ted has been working and adapting in England for a few weeks when Michelle Lasso and Henry Lasso gives a surprise visit. Ted then takes his family to The Crown & Anchor while teaching them some British words. Mae gives Henry some darts and tells him to play, and not to hit the regulars. Unfortunately, that is what he's done, as he accidentally hit one of the pub patrons Paul in the arm.
During a match against Watford F.C., Ted decides to replace Jamie Tartt with Robbie Roberts. When the highlighter shows the numbers, everyone is in shock, and the patrons are angry including Mae who are yelling "You don't know what you're doing!" . But two minutes of added time remaining, Richmond have played well, even without Jamie Tartt. Roy Kent makes an extra pass to Sam Obisanya who scores the goal, and everyone cheers including Mae with other pub regulars. They celebrating Ted and the rest of the team for the winning.
The History[]
During a training session, Dani Rojas is injured and players and staff members attribute this to a curse at the club. Ted decides to call every player to the pub and tells them to listen to Leslie Higgins and pub owner Mae as they tell a story about the origin of the curse. Mae expresses her concern that once the word gets out that the Richmond players are here, the place will be filled with fans. Ted explains that curses don't last forever and gives examples of Boston Red Sox curse, Chicago Cubs curse, and even Martin Scorsese finally won his Oscar for The Departed. Everyone agrees that The Departed was not his best work, but Mae says that Mean Street was.
Mae and Higgins then tells the history of the curse: the origins of the curse extended back to November 1914, when posters went up around Richmond area, soliciting men to try out for the team. The men were duped; it wasn't for a football tryout, but there were recruiters waiting to encourage those boys to fight the World War I. Mae concludes that there were 400 lads enlisted and they had their physical at the treatment room in Nelson Road Stadium. Before she can finishes, the fans are chanting outside the pub, trying to take a glimpse of their favorite footballers, and Mae says 'told you' to Ted.
The Hope That Kills You[]
Mae is very friendly with Rupert Mannion, and even fake-flirts with him which the former owner of the football club reciprocates. especially whenever Rupert treats everyone in the pub to some drinks. It has something to do with her bias against Rebecca Welton who hired Ted as the new manager.
Ted and Beard are having a discussion about whether they should bench Roy after his poor performances at the pub. Ted decides to keep Roy which angers Beard. Beard calls Ted a selfish person for refusing to bench Roy. His outburst is heard by everyone in the pub including Mae. Beard says that Ted is being irresponsible if he thinks that winning is not important because winning does matter for these professional footballers. Beard asks whether he is right, which Mae eagerly answers "A-Fucking-Men!"
When Ted and Beard are having dinner at the pub, they are approached by the regulars Baz, Jeremy, and Paul who thanked the coaches for their efforts, even when their efforts are still not enough. Ted is confused why everyone seemingly already given up and asks whether they ever heard of hope. The regulars laughs and Mae tells him that "It's the hope that kills you."
During the match against Manchester City F.C., Isaac McAdoo leads the team into using the 'Lasso Special' elaborate set-piece; the American Football strategy confuses the opposing team, and it gives Dani Rojas a chance to score a goal. Not only the opposing team, but the fans and the patrons including Mae are confused with the whole thing. Once Dani scores a goal, they are celebrating, however their happiness is cut short when Jamie makes the extra pass to his team player who scores the goal, and Richmond loses the match. Mae sadly says that everything is over once the team is relegated.
The Wise Lady[]
Mae tells Jamie how much Richmond upon Thames needs him when he begs Ted to come back to the club. When she tells Paul, Baz, and Jeremy to fuck off after they have been staring at Jamie, he calls her wise.
During the match against the Manchester City, Mae confesses that she has a Richmond tattoo but refuses to tell where. When the team loses, Beard comes over and talks about how much he feels that Jane Payne, his girlfriend, doesn't say 'I love you' even when he always does. Mae doesn't want to hear him wallow about his girlfriend and screams at Beard that he left Thierry Zoreaux alone defending by himself at a semifinal.
After the news article from Trent Crimm about Ted's panic attack is published, Mae is very supportive of him and tells him that he shouldn't be worry because it will be forgotten soon as the news cycles all the time. She sees that one of his patrons Richard is reading a newspaper where a huge picture of Ted is on the back cover, so she smiles and grabs the newspaper from his hands and rips it apart.
