"Mom City" is the eleventh episode of season 3 of the Apple TV+ series, Ted Lasso. It premiered on May 24, 2023.
Synopsis[]
An unexpected guest has Ted on edge. When Richmond travel to Manchester for a big match, Roy and Keeley become concerned about Jamie.
Plot[]
Ted leaves leaves his house, greeting people as he walks to work, and spots his mother, Dotty, sitting on a park bench to his surprise. Nate is working at A Taste of Athens as a waiter when Colin, Isaac and Will arrive to see if he wants to return to Richmond. Nate says no after hearing Ted hadn’t sent the players to bring him back. Ted invites his mum to his house and finds out she’s been in the UK for a week before inviting her to Nelson Road Stadium to meet the players and staff.
At the press conference before Richmond’s game against Man City, Roy and Sam are surprised at Jamie’s apathetic attitude. Meanwhile, Dotty gets a your round Nelson Road by Rebecca and tells stories to the players, much to the disdain of Ted for the inaccuracies in them. Van Damme is wearing a nose mask due to the injury caused by Dani. In the dressing room, Jamie again displays an apathetic attitude and Roy calls him into the boot room where Jamie cries and says how exhausted he is. In the coach’s office, Higgins suggests bringing Nate back to the club which Roy and Higgins are happy with, but Beard is not.
Roy goes to the KJPR office to convince Keeley to talk with Jamie about his feelings. At The Crown & Anchor, Ted and Beard take Dotty out to catch up. Ted and Mae talk privately about parenting and the effects it has on children. Back at home, Ted settles Dotty in his bedroom and she gives him some newspaper clippings from back in the USA, including ones which focus on his panic attacks. The next day, the players and staff load up on the team bus and make their way to Manchester. Nate is serving at the restaurant and has to justify to customers why he left the coaching profession. In Manchester, Keeley talks with Jamie about how he is feeling and how there’s pressure on him playing at Manchester City for the first time since he left, and in front of his dad who he’d not seen since Wembley.
In the evening during a movie night, Keeley tells Roy she made the situation worse with Jamie. Jamie leaves the film before everyone else and leaves the building, with Keeley and Roy following. They eventually make their way to Jamie’s mum’s house where he seeks advice. At home, Jade tries to convince Nate to go back to Richmond but he declines. At the game, Rebecca, Keeley and Higgins discuss anthems as the players walk on with Jamie being booed. After a tough early passage of play, Richmond score with Colin, thanks to an assist by Jamie. Jamie is tackled intensely during the game and also works hard defensively, clearing the goal line where he is injured. He’s taken off the pitch to get treatment but wants to hold off on being subbed off - Richmond play on with 10 men. Meanwhile, Nate watches the game and is called in by Derek where he is fired due to threats by Jade to expose him.
During the game, Ted speaks to Jamie who says he’s freaked out he can’t see his dad. Ted says Jamie needs to stop thinking about him and forgive him for his own sake. Jamie is inspired by this and upon rejoining the pitch scores another goal for Richmond. He is then subbed off to applause from Richmond and Man City fans, as well as his dad who is in a clinic. Richmond win the game and the players return home and go out to celebrate, while Jamie stays with Roy and Keeley to celebrate while getting his foot checked out. In the coach’s office, Ted shows Beard the rest of the video of Nate tearing apart the Believe sign and the events that follow. Ted laughs at this and Beard feels frustrated. Nate is at home writing Ted an apology letter and wants to return to Richmond but is interrupted by Beard at the door. Beard tells Nate how Ted took him in and how he let Ted down, yet was given another chance. He wants to give Nate that chance too and offers him his job back.
Ted arrives home to spend an evening with his mum and asks her why she came to the UK. When she doesn’t give a definitive answer, Ted gets frustrated with her, thanking her for things she did for him as a kid, but annoyed with other things such as not talking about what happened to his dad. His mum apologises and the pair hug and have dinner together. Meanwhile, Bex shows up at Rebecca’s house alongside Ms. Kaikes about an issue they’ve been having. The next morning, Dotty leaves Ted’s house with a note and some bread she made for him, thanking him for what he did for her.
Ted goes to his office and finds Rebecca where she says she has no truthbomb to give him this year unlike previous years. Ted says, instead, he has one.
