Richmond upon Thames, or more simply Richmond, was the region in southwest London served by AFC Richmond. Its inhabitants — whom, like Roy, were largely in the SW14 postal district — were mostly opposed to the coaching work undertaken by Ted Lasso at their local football club. As Roy's stated postal code indicated, Richmond was actually a part of London, rather than a completely independent town.
Richmond was a relatively brief ride from Heathrow airport, allowing Ted and Coach Beard to drive from the airport to Nelson Road Stadium, while making a stop at Tower Bridge in the same day-part.
In real life, Richmond upon Thames is a borough of Greater London, situated in the south-west of the city, and is noted as an affluent , upper middle-class, leafy area. It contains no professional soccer team but is home to several rugby clubs.

Behind the scenes[]
In real life, Richmond upon Thames is actually a formal London borough, but this point is not made in Ted Lasso. However, the narrative does make it absolutely clear that Nelson Road Stadium is in south London, when the announcers of the home match against Crystal Palace F.C. describe the event as being a "Derby Day in London".
