Sheffield Wednesday Football Club or Wednesday is a professional association football club based in Sheffield, South Yorkshire, England, who competes in League One, the third tier of the English football league system, and featured in the Apple TV+ series, Ted Lasso.
They are founder members of the Premier League and the team has spent most of its league history in English football's top flight, but they have not played at that level since being relegated in 2000.
The Owls, as they are nicknamed, are one of the most successful teams in English football, having won four league titles, three FA Cups, one League Cup and one FA Community Shield. Since its founding, the club has played their home games in blue and white shirts, traditionally in vertical stripes.
After AFC Richmond lost a match to a game against an unnamed club, Ted Lasso checks his schedule and discovers that they are playing against Sheffield on Wednesday. Confused, he asks Coach Beard about it, and the other coach corrects him that they are playing Sheffield Wednesday on Saturday. Ted thinks that they are playing Sheffield on Wednesday, but again, Beard corrects him that they are playing Sheffield Wednesday on Saturday,
Horrified, Ted is surprised that they are playing against Sheffield twice in one week, and Beard patiently explains that the club's name is Sheffield Wednesday, and they are playing against them on Saturday.
And the reason why they are called Sheffield Wednesday is because they used to play on Wednesdays. But nowadays they play on whatever day they feel like, including, but not limited to, Saturdays, which again, is the day that Richmond will be playing them. Ted jokes that he can't attend the match because he has plans.
In the next match against the club, Isaac McAdoo is doing a fun warm-up handshakes with his fellow teammates and coaches. It prompts Chris Kamara from Gillette Soccer Saturday to comment that it's nice to see Isaac's smile which makes Roy Kent abruptly leave the panel and run off to the Nelson Road Stadium to accept the coaching position that was offered to him. Isaac sees Roy enter the stadium and hear the crowds' chant, welcoming him while the new coach takes a stand beside the coach team.
It never mentions whether Richmond wins or lose against Sheffield Wednesday.
