"Signs" is the fifth episode of season 3 of the Apple TV+ series, Ted Lasso. It premiered on April 12, 2023.
Synopsis[]
With their season in a tailspin, Richmond try to right the ship against mighty Manchester City. Off the pitch, everyone faces their own setbacks.
Plot[]
Richmond are on a losing streak and left reeling after their latest defeat to Newcastle and drop to 9th in the Premier League. After the game, the coaches blame every department for the defeats and Rebecca interrupts them, exclaiming to Ted asking if they will ever win another game. Ted tries to calm her down, saying they will fix the situation. Later, Rebecca is at a restaurant and finds the green matchbook Tish said would be important in her life. She’s interrupted by John Wingsnight and his fiancée Jessica Darling, who catch up with Rebecca. In a story Jessica tells of John defending her honor, and she refers to John as her “shite in nining armour”. And this shocks Jessica as it is the phrase the psychic said to her.
Keeley, Barbara, and Jack discuss the client base for KJPR and it is agreed that the company should keep a smaller client base so they can pay more attention to them as opposed to growth which Barbara wants. As Barbara leaves unhappy, Shandy enters saying she is making a new app to be a contender to banter - Starfucker. This is for those who want to go out with celebrities. As Shandy leaves, Jack wants Keeley to fire Shandy though she is unsure of this. In the Nelson Road Stadium dressing room, players see headlines of Nate and Anastasia. Meanwhile, the coaches and Trent discuss formations for the game against Manchester City and are interrupted when Ted gets a text from Michelle, citing a bullying incident with Henry. The coaches discuss options for this.
In Rebecca’s office, Higgins suggests to her that she should consider firing Ted due to Richmond’s poor results. Rebecca doesn’t want to talk about it and asks of Higgins beliefs in psychics which he does believe in. In the corridor at Richmond, Ted and Rebecca meet and Rebecca apologises for calling Ted “Coach” in passing and they stand in silence briefly. Meanwhile, Barbara tells Keeley of an incident with Shandy the previous night where a client fired her due to a drunken pitch. Keeley calls Shandy in and tries to delicately fire her, but Shandy does not take it well and goes on a tirade in the office before leaving. Rebecca goes to see Dr. Wagner about the possibilities of having children and she is not sure who to put as an emergency contact on the form, noting others there who are part of a couple. With the game against Manchester city the next day, Zava gives an inspiring speech to the players to encourage them. That night, Ted speaks to Michelle where she reveals Henry is not the victim of bullying - he is the bully himself.
On game day, Keeley asks if Jack wants to come along to the game which she duly accepts, though Barbara doesn’t. At the ground, Zava is nowhere to be found and Richmond are forced to start with Colin instead. In the KJPR office, Jack smells something and they find a lamb and poo in one of the rooms. Giving the lamb to Edward, the pair light candles to drown out the smell and start to drink. Meanwhile, Nate arrives at his favourite restaurant with Anastasia and gets a window seat. He is surprised when Anastasia says she does not like the food. Just before kick off, Rebecca gets a text from Keeley saying she can’t make the game due to the lamb incident, and also from Dr. Wagner, saying he will phone later with the results. Anastasia is still not getting on with the meal with Nate and she decides to leave with friends - leaving him alone. Richmond lose 4-0 to Manchester City and the losing streak continues.
In Rebecca’s office, she hears from Higgins that Zava has retired. She then gets a call from the doctor where he tells her the results of the tests. She tries to call Keeley, who is distracted by conversations with Jack about relationships. Keeley kisses Jack and worries she made a mistake, and Jack reassures her it wasn’t. At dinner, Nate is alone and Jade brings enough food for two. Nate asks if she would join him which she duly does. At Richmond, Ted is starting to have a panic attack in his office but is interrupted by a call from Henry where they discuss the bullying situation and agree to play Roblox later. He then talks to the players to reassure them that the team will be okay without Zava, even saying they will be better off as the players want to be there. He tells them to believe and as he does so, the sign breaks in half behind him to the shock of the players. Ted proceeds to tear the sign further, saying the players don’t need that sign to believe - they need what’s inside them.
