"Smells Like Mean Spirit" was the season three premiere of the Apple TV+ series, Ted Lasso. It premiered on March 15, 2023.
Synopsis[]
The newly promoted AFC Richmond face mockery as pundits predict they'll finish dead last this season.
Plot[]
Ted goes to the airport with Henry as Michelle sends a text wishing Henry a safe flight. Ted walks Henry to an attendant who chats to Ted and Henry to make them feel comfortable. Henry gives Ted a miniature Premier League trophy as a good omen for the season. After giving Henry a hug, Ted allows the attendant to take Henry away. On the way back to Richmond in the taxi, Ted calls Sharon, saying he is fine but feels guilty about sending Henry on a flight by himself. Sharon asks Ted how he feels about the upcoming season, where he says he feels somewhat positive. After asking Sharon a series of personal questions she alots time for, they end the call and Sharon walks into a room with a man and closes the door behind her. Ted tidies the house from where Henry had been staying over and later walks to work, greeting people en route.
Higgins and Rebecca read through the papers, all of which have AFC Richmond finishing last in the Premier League. Rebecca is furious at this. Ted walks into the room and they both notice he is feeling down. They also note that West Ham are also to finish in the top four. Rebecca recommends Ted signs new players to bolster Richmond’s team, though Ted declines saying his team dynamic is working well as it stands. Rebecca leaves to go and meet Keeley. In the dressing room, players also read the reports forecasting Richmond will finish last in the league and get agitated by this. In the coaching office, Roy goes over a coaching system with Ted and Coach Beard. He recommends the 4 - 4 - 2 formation as Richmond players will have used that formation all their lives. Ted is familiar with this formation from his time playing FIFA with Henry. Meanwhile, Nate arrives at the West Ham stadium in his small Mini Cooper. Arriving in his office, he reads positive messages on Twitter about his management of West Ham before ordering someone out of his office.
Rebecca arrives at Keeley’s office and the pair embrace. Inside the office, Keeley discusses the previous owner, where she said she got a good deal on the office due to the lease being broken for the previous owner due to groping. She reveals an indicator of this which is an opaque screen that can raise blocking the view into the office. Keeley soon begins to cry, citing she has to make time to sit at her desk and cry and she has double booked that with Rebecca’s visit. At training, Ted notices the team is distracted by the predictions they will finish last. He hatches a plan and asks Will to go and get the bus driver. Rebecca and Keeley continue their lunch, where Keeley asks Rebecca about how things are going at Richmond. Rebecca is worried that Ted isn’t worried about Richmond finishing last. She also hates the idea of Rupert being happy. They are interrupted by the chief financial officer for Keeley’s company, reminding her to watch expenses such as buying unnecessary flowers. Rebecca then leaves to head back to Richmond.
Nate is overseeing training with his West Ham squad and notices a player not performing well. He calls the player over and makes him stand behind the line, calling out to other players that this is the “dumb dumb line” that may be used in future. He is interrupted by someone saying Rupert wants to see him. In Rupert’s office, Rupert says Nate is killer, liking the predictions of where West Ham will finish in the league. Furthermore, when asked about Richmond finishing 20th in the league, Nate responds Richmond will finish there as there is no 21st, much to Rupert’s amusement. As they talk, Nate’s car is being prepared to be towed away due to being in the wrong parking place at the behest of Rupert. Nate tells Rupert though that is his car, and Rupert calls off the towing. The Richmond players get off the bus and reluctantly make their way down to the sewers, as workmen watch on filming players going down the drain.
Higgins and Rebecca watch the press conference with Nate. Down in the sewers, Richmond’s tour guide gives facts about the sewage system and Beard impresses with his knowledge. At the West Ham press conference, Nate says things are going well but begins to panic and ducks beneath the desk as he struggles to build a rapport with reporters. He tells them he is not overwhelmed with the job at West Ham and is annoyed by the reporter asking such a silly question. Down in the sewer, Ted reveals to the players that he showed them the sewer system to show how it is full of other people’s excrement. Richmond are experiencing a similar predicament where they are full of other people’s problems - such as those commenting on where Richmond will finish in the league - and they need to be aware of this and use it. If someone is feeling unconfident, they should take some of Jamie’s confidence and if they are feeling down, they should take some of Danny’s happiness. At the press conference, Nate makes the same “because there’s no 21st” joke he said to Rupert in response to wear Richmond will finish and is then shown pictures of Richmond going into the sewers and what comment he has for that. He responds that it’s because Richmond has a coach suitable for the sewers.
In the dressing room, the team and coaches find out about the sewer picture and the players begin to question and feel down about this. Ted goes to talk to the players, but Jamie encourages them instead, saying that it is just people saying these things, let it flow like in the London sewer system. Ted gets a message from Rebecca telling him to meet her now. She is furious, telling Ted that he needs to fight back against those laughing at them. In the Richmond press conference, a reporter asks Ted about Nate’s comments to him. Ted says West Ham are lucky to have him and that it was a very funny comment he made. Ted continues though saying he thought Nate could do better, and begins a joke session with the reporters which makes Rebecca and Keeley happy. During this, Ted gets a text saying that Henry has landed safely. Nate is watching the press conference and slams the lid closed after seeing the positive reception Ted is getting from the reporters. He gets a text from his mum, who says his dad is unhappy he swore. He is interrupted by someone who says Rupert has got him a car.
Keeley and Roy talk to Phoebe to tell her that they broke up. Phoebe asks why, to which Roy says they have been too busy, especially lately. Keeley is more unsure however and is not really able to answer Phoebe’s questions. Roy and Phoebe leave, where she asks Roy if he is doing the right thing to which he says he is not sure. Furthermore, she says he is being stupid. Ted and Beard walk home, with Ted wondering if they are being crazy, still being in Richmond. When he gets home, Ted talks to Henry and tells him he has moved that Premier League trophy into the Lego Nelson Road Stadium they made. They discuss Nate and how his figure should be moved next to Ted. Just because Nate is part of a different team, they can still be friends. He says Richmond should still try to win and also shows Ted an Infinity Gauntlet he was given by Michelle’s friend.
