"So Long, Farewell" is the twelth and final episode of season 3 of the Apple TV+ series, Ted Lasso. It premiered on May 31, 2023.
Synopsis[]
AFC Richmond play their final match of the season.
Plot[]
Gary Lineker and Thierry Henry sum up the stakes - if Manchester City lose or draw their last game and Richmond win, the greyhounds win the Premier League. Rebecca watches from her kitchen as it’s revealed Rupert is involved in a scandal. Ted walks in shortly after followed by Beard and Jane who stayed overnight due to a gas leak.
In the Richmond dressing room, Isaac orders outstanding fines from the season to be paid by players for misdemeanors. Keeley and Roy have an uneasy exchange of words as Ted reads a message from Henry who is excited for him to come home. Trent shows Ted and Beard and manuscript of his book to read through. They’re interrupted by Roy who asks how they know a girl likes someone though he walks out before the Diamond Dogs can mount up. In Rebecca’s office, she will not comment on a new Richmond manager, nor about Rupert to Keeley and Higgins. She also considers the option to sell some or all of the club. Out on the training ground, Ted and Beard oversee their last training session. As it end, the players perform “So Long, Farewell” with adulation at the end as Ted calls the performance “Perfect”.
Later, Keeley gives Ted and Beard parting gifts for the plane and then prepares the players for their conference later. She meets Jamie in the corridor after who asks her if she’d accompany him on a media trip to Brazil which agrees to. Roy sees this and asks Jamie out for a beer later. Rebecca talks to her mum about head leaving and her future. Mae interrupts them, saying their bill has been taken care of by Baz, Jeremy, and Paul saying Rebecca is like the mum they never had. Ted reads through Trent’s manuscript as Trent critiques Ted’s reaction. Jamie and Roy go for a beer and discuss their relationship with Keeley. Rebecca joins Ted sitting in Nelson Road Stadium and tries unsuccessfully to persuade him to stay in the UK. Roy and Jamie arrive at Keeley’s house, battered and bruised, explaining that they fought over her and want her to choose which one she wants to be with. She shows them the door. Teds goes to leave Nelson Road that night and sees Nate staring at the empty wall where the “Believe” sign was. Nate tearfully apologises to Ted about everything that happened and Ted reassures him, saying he tore the “Believe” sign up a load more times after Nate did.
It’s game day, and Michelle, Henry and Sharon watch on. Ted bemoans league names as Roy interrupts, asking to be initiated into the Diamond Dogs as he grapples with change. The coaches give advice to Roy. Rupert meets with George Cartrick and tells him to win, with the threat of losing the club looming over him. He then meets with Rebecca and Sassy who both do not wish him well. In the Richmond dressing room, the players receive a care package from Zava including T-shirts and an avocado from his farm. Dani gives Van Damme a new face mask which players say makes him look like a superhero. The coaches show the players an inspiring video from their past which causes them to cry, which continues even into the lineup at the start of the game. The game begins and West Ham score early on, followed by a Manchester City goal in the other game. West Ham score again not long before half time. At half-time, Ted gives a speech thanking the players and wants them to try their best in the second half - they need to have hope and Believe. In response to this, the players put together the pieces of the broken “Believe” sign to make it whole - the fourth secret to football.
Early on in the second half, Richmond repeatedly hit the woodwork from shots until Jamie scores. Soon after, Jamie wins a penalty. Jamie then Dani pass on taking it, leaving Isaac to take the shot - his first penalty in his career. Taking the shot, the crowd and players believe it went over the net, before a closer examination reveals it went through the net, counting as a goal. As the net is prepared, Rupert storms on to the pitch, demanding George take Jamie out. George refuses and Rupert pushes him over, promoting boos from the crowd as he walks off. West Ham score and Ted is the only one of the coaching staff to know that it was offside, that it was duly rules as. Richmond get a free kick and they decide to go for Nate’s play which worked well in the past. Richmond score and win the game, leading to fans running on to the pitch.
The next day, Ted grabs some papers at the airport as he heads for his flight. He takes another selfie with Tommy, who gives commiserations on Richmond finishing second. Ted’s surprised to see Rebecca at the airport who bought a ticket to make it through security to meet Ted. The pair say a final goodbye as she says she is staying at Richmond, selling 49% of the club to the fans. On the plane with Beard, Ted asks if they made the right decision. Beard is teary, saying he wants to be with Jane but feels bad for Ted. With Ted’s blessing, Beard fakes an appendix flare out to get off the plane. As Rebecca leaves the airport, she meets a little girl and a pilot who is the same person she met in Amsterdam. Ted opens his gift from Keeley which is a Richmond snowglobe.
Trent reads Ted’s feedback on his book, delighted with the positivity, and notes Ted thinks the name should be changed from “The Lasso Way” as it was never about him. Keeley and Barbara are working together as partners at “KBPR” as Roy is named the new manager of Richmond. Nate has dinner with his family, Sam is called up to play for Nigeria, and Jamie catches up with his dad. The players convene for a BBQ at Higgins’ house as Mae hands out shares of Richmond to fans. Trent is at a book signing for “The Richmond Way”, his renamed book, chronicling Richmond’s Premier League season. Keeley shows Rebecca a proposal for a Richmond Women’s Team which the pair are excited about, as Roy sees Sharon for a session. Later, Roy, Beard and Nate put the repaired “Believe” sign on the wall. Beard gets married to Jane in an emotional ceremony for the attendees.
Ted arrives home, to the delight of Henry who runs out to greet him. As time passes, Ted is coaching a junior soccer team Henry is a part of. As Henry gets frustrated at missing a shot, Ted reminds him to be a goldfish as he watches on.
